This is currently controlled in .config/autostart but we get a race to see who starts up first - firefox or thunderbird!

Perhaps we need a central DBUS aware process/program that manages all activity including start up to ensure that browser, email, skype etc. all come up correctly and stay up.

Currently Pushbutton Linux figures out the machine short name and then looks for the 'machine-short-name' in the cgi-bin directory and if it sees a amixer-skype.config file it uses this as a base for setting audio settings. The vol.cgi program decides from this file how to set volume levels.

It would be nice if this was more transparent and new computer configurations would not have to be created by hand.

At one point it was thought it would be a good idea to try and only use 'sh' shells since they are the default in 'squeeze' now.

This got us in trouble as there are a few cases where we need bash functionality .. and since we got the bright idea to append .sh or .bash on the scripts it has caused alot of confusion with .sh files being bash files etc.

Another conflict was when a sh script would 'source' another file with bash coding causing a script failure.

Solution:
- remove all .sh/.bash suffixes!
- generally use bash unless it is a small stand alone script

cpio streaming to md5sum might be a more practical solution.

NOTE: the issue is that you can't rely on an md5sum of a .tar file as it can result in a slightly different .tar depending on conditions unknown. That's why we got into this mess!

Currently the /etc/fstab file has to be setup to permit the user to mount the flash .. and here we have to define the mount point. For this to work we need to enter in fstab all possible dev's .. which is a bit much as some flashcard readers don't come up with obvious /dev names!

Periodically the new cbc radio flash interface in a IFRAME crashes the browser in tailwind-live squeeze using iceweasel 3.5.11.

Seem to remember that firefox equivalent was more robust ...

Ok .. we are now using firefox .. so need to watch for this.

If the user's volume has been turned down this is even a bigger problem!

Possible solutions with a Skype monitor program (using DBUS coms) and either a sound through speakers or a flash on screen or both!

It could also be useful to have a hardware interface to a remote light or sound maker or both!

Presently we edit the apps/menu/cgi-bin files for specific users.

Actually, it really should only be setup from a website and then updated anytime user reboots.

The idea here is a website could request a users machine to launch a reverse ssh shell access or reverse VNC desktop access targeting the ip address from the website data.

This solves the firewall problem of setting up the users router to port map ssh or vnc to the users computer.

This is a perl subroutine that tries to pick the icon from words in the weather description. Surprisingly this is not trivial!

Solutions might be just refining algorithm or soemthing completely different - like getting icons from 'full' weather webpage and then using them for each day in the week ... or go to BBC mobile weather!

The reason we go to rss is to manage the window size for small screens like the acer aspire one

There are a number of important firefox settings that need to be set to ensure:
a) browser update dialogs do not pop up unexpectedly and confuse user
b) tabs and tab focus correct
c) window size - fullsize?
d) URL window and shortcut bookmarks - no search window, no status bar

Some complications - earlier TWL OS versions have .mozilla/firefox in /etc/skel

We currently download a mozilla/firefox configuration from TWL website on MyPlace bootup (per user)

typing characters in terminal window is slow on some machines.
The problem is fixed by changing background of window to solid from transparent.

Solution: we need to change .config/??? default to solid.

For the ASUS eee-top we had to stop and restart wicd ... can't remember why! .. but in 1.0.2 this can cause wicd to ask this root passwd question!
.. so we removed this hack .. but will have to revisit eee-top.

The issue is there are times when you want a different media path for the live directory .. ie: /live/image/live-squeeze.
2 problems:
1: boot.sh is expected to be in /live/image/live by twl bootup scripts
2: if twl_setup_dir not defined (in boot.sh), boot.sh will expect the backup copy to be in /live/image/live ..

1: quick fix is to simply create /live/image/live and put boot.sh in there .. but reduces flexibility
2: quick fix is to edit boot.sh .. but we should really look at the /proc/cmdline and get the live-media-path and use THAT to look for twl_setup_dir
... but this is all in boot.sh .. so shold be an easy fix

This did work fine with iceweasel but switching to firefox in this release messed all this up.
We should also disable updates, adjust tab options, maybe rework toolbars optimized for small laptop display (height issue).
NOTE that pushbutton linux may also have to manage similar settings.

would need to talk to Mufti to ensure we know exactly how to get the latest whitedune from his website .. consistently.
It would also be useful to be able to extract the current version number from the current TWL whitedune binary .. and to be able to know from the whitedune site what the latest version number is.
